When people in their sixties experience unusual feelings — lost time, suspended awareness, confusion, seizures — they may think their symptoms are caused by some of the physical or mental problems that sometimes accompany aging. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder which causes a sudden burst of hyperactivity in the brain. The myth exists that this disorder is only a childhood concern. Seniors are now the second largest group of individuals who are newly diagnosed with epilepsy. Unfortunately, the lack of education and awareness about epilepsy has perpetuated the negative stigma surrounding this disorder.  Click HERE to view an episode of The Bulletin Board, a Rogers Cable 10 program which connects York Region residents to information about special events, fundraisers and non-profit organizations in the area. This short video provides an overview of the services provided by Epilepsy York Region and highlights the support we provide for seniors living with epilespy.   NEW HORIZONS SENIORS’ PROJECT         Due to these alarming concerns, Epilepsy York Region has engaged in a new and exciting program for seniors living with epilepsy. This program, which is coordinated by seniors for seniors, is designed to provide education about epilepsy and help to eliminate the negative stigma so often attached to this illness. This initiative has come about as a result of a financial grant from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. If you are an individual, or part of a senior’s group or seniors’ organization, and wish to receive information, please contact us at 905-508-5404 or seniorsproject@epilepsyyork.org
